Trust, empowerment and impact. Hire smart people, listen to them, trust them - and get out of their way to let them have impact on the product and process.
I am the Director of Talent & Culture for FormAssembly, where I lead a small team focused on ensuring that we attract, retain and empower all of our teams to be the best they can be. Our entire company is 100% remote, and I am based out of the Portland, Oregon, area.
Tell us about your team!
How big is it?
On my own HR team, we have an HR Generalist and a Recruiter. We’re a trio of extremely nimble, adaptive HR professionals. Overall, we have 130 teammates across the organization both full-time employees and individual contractors.
Where are your teammates located?
Our team is spread across the globe from the Philippines to Brazil to Western Europe and across North America.
What does your team do? What are you responsible for?
I look at our HR team focused on three core pillars, Attraction (Recruiting), Retention (the Employee Experience) and Compliance. Together all three done well creates a dynamic culture and team that can thrive here at FormAssembly.
What are the components of a strong remote culture?
Trust, empowerment and impact. Hire smart people, listen to them, trust them - and get out of their way to let them have impact on the product and process.
Strong remote cultures are built on strong connections. Strong connections are built with Hailey.
How do you make sure your team is happy and engaged in their work?
Communication and connection are paramount. Try to find opportunities for people to come together and connect as people before colleagues. There are a million ways to experiment and try to find new ways for people to collaborate and get to know each other as people even over video conferencing.

What's your biggest challenge as a remote leader?
Always being inventive. At this point in the pandemic, we’re all experiencing “Zoom Fatigue” but how do we keep things fresh and interesting? How do you make the medium secondary to the experience?
