It comes down to recognizing that we’re all humans sitting behind our laptop screens. Working from home is not the same as in-person work, thus making it imperative that we make conscious efforts to communicate with each other. Shared learnings are minimal as everyone works in a silo, making constant collaboration and communication important for achieving personal and organizational goals.
I’m working as the Recruitment Lead at Beacon Talent - a talent solution provider that partners with companies to attract, engage and retain the best talent across multiple industries.
I started my journey with Beacon as a Recruitment Associate, identifying and engaging with prospects for our partner companies and assisting them with their hiring needs. As a Lead, I am responsible for guiding my team to delivering value and hiring results for our partners.
Tell us about your team!
How big is it?
Beacon has grown tremendously over the past 1 year and we’re now a 25+ person company including sales, marketing, operations and recruitment operations. I am currently leading a team of 3-4 Recruitment Associates and looking to hire more over the next couple of months.
Where are your teammates located?
Beacon is headquartered in Brooklyn, NY but our team is all over the United States (Colorado, California, Missouri, New Jersey, etc). We also have a team of sourcing specialists in the Philippines.
What does your team do? What are you responsible for?
My team works collectively to achieve our mission of elevating the field of talent. My team’s day to day operations focus on working with our partners to outline the best hiring strategy, building unique talent pipelines that meet their requirements, and engaging with prospects.
What are the components of a strong remote culture?
Collaboration and Communication. It comes down to recognizing that we’re all humans sitting behind our laptop screens. Working from home is not the same as in-person work, thus making it imperative that we make conscious efforts to communicate with each other (be it about work or just to catch up). Shared learnings are minimal as everyone works in a silo, making constant collaboration and communication extremely important for achieving personal and organizational goals.
Strong remote cultures are built on strong connections. Strong connections are built with Hailey.
How do you make sure your team is happy and engaged in their work?
Transparency, communication and flexibility. One of our core values is that ‘we set expectations early and often’ and this goes a long way in ensuring that our team is always set up for success.
We’ve tried to foster an environment where everyone can share their thoughts and feelings without any fear and as a team we’re always looking for ways to support each other.
It is also important to recognize that with work from home, the boundaries between personal and professional lives have been blurred. We provide as much flexibility as possible in terms of work hours and encourage our team to take time off and vacation whenever needed.
Additionally, we rely on daily check-ins, 1:1s, happy hour and celebrate both personal and professional wins to keep the team motivated. We’ve also incorporated a weekly ‘Brunch and Learn’ session where we brainstorm ideas and share our knowledge/learnings on selected topics.

What's your biggest challenge as a remote leader?
The constant planning. In a remote environment, it comes down to intentionality. Even a quick 5 mins check-in call needs to be planned and scheduled in advance and it’s even more inconvenient when the team is scattered across different time zones.

Team-building Activities
In addition to the regular check-ins, we have a weekly happy hour and morning coffee chat sessions where we play online games, share our experiences and just chat and hangout. We also do monthly all hands in an effort to maintain transparency and encourage collaboration across departments. We meet in-person about once a year but the team is always welcome to work from our Brooklyn office if they’re in town.
For in-person meetings, we plan Karaoke has always been a hit!
Remote Games
Scribble.io and Code names have been the most popular.
Icebreakers
Everytime we have a new hire on the team, we go with the classic ‘Two Truths and a Lie’ and so far we’ve had a great experience with it.

Resources for remote leaders
Leadership is all about people and relationships and what could be better than learning from the people around you?
By engaging in conversations with the people in my network, I learn from their experiences and they help me navigate my strengths and weaknesses as a leader.
I look up to some of the best leaders that I’ve had in my life for advice and guidance but I also recognize that leadership is constantly evolving, and it eventually comes down to understanding the motivations and goals of the people that you’re leading.
